Did you know one of the biggest sources of information for identity theft is sitting outside your house? And then you put it out to the curb once a week, and practically invite the thieves to thumb through your personal, private documents that you threw away instead of shredding. So AARP Maine wants to help!

I think, for a lot of us, when we think of identity theft, it's in large-scale information breaches, like the one that happened recently at Anthem insurance. Or, having your information stolen from an online site like Amazon or EBay. But crooks will also go through your trash. I mean, it's a great source for things like bank statements, insurance claim sheets, and tax forms. Documentation that contains everything from your birth date to your social security number! Scary, huh?

Obviously, the best way to prevent this is by shredding all your sensitive documents before disposing of them. But not everyone has a shredder. And, even if you do, you may have boxes upon boxes of paperwork that would take you forever to go through. So, AARP invites you to come see them Tuesday at Sam's Club in Bangor with those boxes of paperwork and let them dispose of it for you.

AARP Maine has partnered with Records Management to bring a huge shredder truck to Sam's Club on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You're encouraged to bring all your sensitive documents to be shredded during the event. There's no charge to take part and you don't have to be a member of AARP or Sam's Club.

While you're there, AARP Maine will have information about Fraud Watch. It's one way AARP is helping folks avoid falling victim to identity theft. Spend some time tonight locating all the sensitive documents you no longer need and run them by Sam's Club on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A few minutes of your time may save you a lot of headaches later on!
