The Wells Police Department is reporting that a charter fishing vessel contacted them after seeing a Great White Shark Saturday afternoon about 1.2 miles off the coast of Moody Beach in Wells.

While police were not able to confirm a sighting after deploying their boat, they have contacted the U.S. Coast Guard and neighboring communities.

Police say while such sightings are not infrequent, it is unusual give the time of year and proximity to the beach. Police say they do not see any danger or need to close the beach at this time.

Police ask anyone who sees a shark to contact Sgt. Kevin Chabot or the on-duty supervisor at 646-9354.
