Portland Police are investigating how a patient at Maine Medical Center got out a window Tuesday night and fell to their death.

The Portland Press Herald says the incident happened just after 5 p.m. Tuesday. What's not clear, at this time, is whether the patient fell or intentionally jumped from a sixth floor window in the Richards Tower section of Maine Medical Center in Portland. Hospital officials will only say that the deceased was a male patient, pending notification of family.

Hospital officials are cooperating with police on the investigation. MMC spokesperson Clay Holtzman said in a statement, "Our thoughts go out first and foremost to the individual's family during this difficult time, as well as our shocked and deeply saddened staff."
