Police in Portland have identified the man whose body was pulled from the water off the Eastern Promenade early Thursday morning.

Jonathan Knights, 42, of Portland, apparently drowned after falling into the water near Fish Point at about 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday, reports the Portland Press Herald.

Knights' body was located near Portland Yacht Services at about 12:15 a.m. on Thursday, said Lt. James Sweatt, spokesman for the Portland Police Department.

Witnesses told police that Knights fell about 10 or 15 feet from a rock sea wall and landed in the water. While he was in the water, they say they talked to him and tried to get him to go to a place where they could help him, but they eventually lost sight of him.

Knights’ body will be examined at the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
