Maine Gov. Paul LePage is one of the least popular governors in the United States, but a new poll finds he could still be tough to beat in a reelection campaign under certain circumstances.

The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling, finds only 39 percent of voters approve of the fiery Republican governor's job performance with 55 percent opposed. Despite the apparent lack of support, however, the same poll finds LePage would win a three-way race for governor when matched up against some well-known names in Maine politics.

The poll found LePage would win a hypothetical, three-way match-up with 2010 runner-up independent Eliot Cutler and Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud as well as a three-way contest with Cutler and former Democratic Gov. John Baldacci.

However, the poll finds LePage would lose a head-to-head contest. if he faces either Cutler, Michaud, Baldacci or Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree in 2014.

Baldacci, of Bangor, is the favorite 2014 candidate among Democrats who were surveyed with 28 percent support followed by Pingree at 21 percent and Michaud at percent.

Public Policy Polling surveyed 1,268 Maine voters and 510 usual Democratic primary voters from Jan. 18-20. The margin of error for the overall sample is +/-2.8 percent and +/-4.4 percent for the Democratic portion.

The poll's complete results are available at Public Policy Polling.
