Police Warn of Medical Alert Scam

Bucksport Police are warning elderly residents about a scam that targets Medical Alert customers and tries to bilk them out of private banking information.

Medical Alert bracelets, necklaces, etc. offer a safeguard for seniors who live alone and may need help in a situation where they can't get to the phone. The devices usually have a button the customer can hit when they need help, prompting a response from EMT's and/or family members.

Now, a phone scam is circulating that targets these very vulnerable Mainers. Bucksport Police say someone, posing as a Medical Alert employee, is calling elderly residents and offering a 'change of services.' The scammer then tries to get the potential victim to give them access to their banking information.

Bucksport's Officer Harlan tried to contact the Medical Alert 'employee,' but they repeatedly refused to accept the call. Mainers are warned that this is a scam! It's never safe to give your personal or banking information over the phone. If you receive one of these calls, hang up and then let the police know.
