Police say excessive speed and the possibility of deer in the road likely caused a fatal crash in Weld Saturday night.

Pubic Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said a Massachusetts man was killed in the one-car crash. Troopers were called to the scene on School Street at about 11:30. Investigators say the car was traveling north on Route 156 when the operator, 58-year-old Richard Rogers of Pembroke, Massachusetts lost control.

The car went onto the dirt shoulder of the road and then went into a spin before crossing the center line and striking a large tree. Rogers died at the scene. The rear of the car sustained massive damage.

Police say excessive speed and the possible presence of deer in or near the roadway likely caused the crash. Weld and Wilton Fire Departments aided the State Police at the scene.
