State police have released the name of a man who died after a vehicle crashed into the back of his car in Falmouth as he was slowing down due to another accident a short distance away.

The victim was identified as Joshua Martin, 36, of North Yarmouth, state police said in a Wednesday news release.

Police said the car that collided with Martin's vehicle was operated by Margaret Anne King, 17, of West Bath. She suffered minor injuries and was taken by her parents to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

The accident caused a massive traffic jam. Hundreds of drivers stuck in the backup were directed by police and Maine DOT workers to turn around and drive south in the northbound lanes of I-295 and then take the crossover at the Falmouth-Portland line.

A detour was also set up in Portland to prevent additional vehicles from entering the northbound lanes of I-295.
