A Houlton man is facing two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of an Oakfield couple early Monday morning. Matthew Davis, 32, is accused of killing the couple and burning their home, stealing vehicles, and setting two other fires in a pre-dawn crime spree.

State police today identified the man who was killed as 51-year-old Michael Kitchen. The woman who died is presumed to be 49-year-old Heidi Pratt. An autopsy conducted by the State Medical Examiner's office showed Kitchen died from multiple gunshot wounds. An autopsy on Pratt is scheduled for Wednesday and a positive ID is pending additional work by the ME's office.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says Kitchen worked as an auto mechanic at a garage in Houlton. At this point in the investigation, McCausland says there's no known connection between the victims and Davis, who worked as a carpenter.

The State Fire Marshall's office says Davis is also a suspect in the three fires they are investigating, at the Oakfield home of Pratt, at the Katahdin Forest Products facility in Oakfield, and a pickup truck lit on fire near a boat launch in nearby Island Falls.

Davis is scheduled to appear in Aroostook County Superior Court in Houlton on Wednesday morning. He's currently being held at the Aroostook County Jail.
