Pilot Presumed Dead in Houlton Plane Crash

Maine State Police

Police are releasing more details about an early morning plane crash in Houlton. Most of the wreckage is said to be below the surface of a man-made pond. And officials say, at this point, the pilot is presumed dead.

Border Patrol and Customs officials that were waiting for the plane told police they heard what sounded like an engine failing and a crash somewhere between 1 and 2 o’clock this morning. The plane, that was traveling from Labrador to Florida, had been expected to land at 1 o’clock for a customs inspection. When it failed to arrive, a search was launched by the Houlton and State Police.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release that the twin engine plane appears to have clipped some trees and then flipped over into a man-made pond off the White Settlement Road in Houlton. The plane is upside down in the water with only one wheel visible above the surface. The pond is currently being drained in order for rifest responders to get to the wreckage.

The pilot is presumed dead and he was the only person on board the plane. We’ll update this story as more details become available.
