The Maine House on Thursday voted 76-69 in favor of a bill that would instruct the Department of Transportation to study the feasibility of bringing passenger rail service back to Bangor.

The Bangor Daily News reports the study would focus on the condition of the tracks and the cost of maintaining them.

Rep. Archie Verow (D-Brewer) supports extending passenger train service to Bangor.

“Bringing passenger rail back to the Bangor area would enhance our local economy by improving connections between communities across Maine and beyond,” Verow told the BDN.

The bill faces further votes in the Maine House and Senate.
