The National Weather Service is urging Mainers to take precautions in advance of a snow storm heading our way Tuesday.

The forecast calls for 16 inches of snow in the Bangor area, and a winter storm warning has been issued for most of Maine as the Nor'easter makes its way to the state.

The winter storm warning will be in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday to noon on Wednesday.

The snow is expected to start in the Bangor area around 11 a,m. Tuesday. It is expected to be heavy on Tuesday afternoon and evening and cause white-out conditions with blowing and drifting snow. The snow could mix with sleet and rain along the immediate coast on Tuesday night.

The snow is expected to move out of the region Wednesday morning, ending in the Bangor area around 3 a.m.

In advance of the storm, the National Weather Service is urging Mainers not to travel. If you do have to travel, officials urge you to take precautions such as keeping extra food, water and a flashlight in your car.

Officials from Emera Maine on Monday said they were preparing for the storm by ensuring adequate staffing levels and preparing response vehicles should a power outage occur. The power company also shared a link to what you should do if you lose power.
