According to a post on the Penobscot County Sheriff's Facebook page, there is a new phone scam going around. Someone is calling around to folks and telling them that there are warrants out for them that are being called in, and that they can pay their bail over the phone.

The Sheriff's office makes it very clear in their post that they will never, ever call people and try to collect money from them over the phone regarding anything to do with outstanding warrants, etc. They've received several complaints throughout the day today, and have been trying to get word out as quickly as possible.

There are no details about how the caller is choosing who he/she gets in touch with, so it could happen to any of us. But don't be fooled, even if you have warrants. Again, they will not call you with the option of paying your bail over the phone. So if anyone does call you, do the safe thing and do not give them any personal info of any kind. Simply report the call to the Sheriff's Office, and let them take it from there.

So keep your wits about you, and be safe!
