Fire officials say a passerby rescued a man from a burning home in Detroit Monday night.

The Kennebec Journal reports the fire destroyed a home and an attached barn on River Road.

We're told Gilbert Shaw lived in the home. He suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Sebasticook Valley Health for treatment.

Detroit Fire Chief Don Chute says a passing driver spotted the fire and stopped to help.

He says the man used a ladder to help Shaw escape from a second-story balcony.

Chute says Shaw lost everything in the fire and the American Red Cross was contacted to assist the victim.

The state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
