State police are investigating after packages where stolen this week from the Howland Post Office, and officers say some of the packages likely contained Christmas presents.

Maine State Police said Thursday that the burglary took place sometime between 4:15 p.m. Wednesday and  8:30 a.m. Thursday.

The post office lobby is open 24 hours a day, but police said the suspect or suspects forced their way into the storage area, which is kept locked.

Most of the packages that were taken were awaiting pickup. The items inside the packages included male and female footwear, children's and adult clothing, electronics and medication.

Troopers are asking anyone with information about the burglary or anyone who saw something suspicious to contact Trooper Adam Gould at (207) 973-3700.
