Lewiston Police say they have identified and interviewed the owner of a dog who was abandoned at a shelter before being struck and killed by a car.

The surveillance video from the Greater Androscoggin County Animal Shelter spread across social media, with pleas to identify the person in the minivan who dropped the dog off. The owner can be seen getting out of the van, and letting a yellow lab mix out of the vehicle, before driving away.

The dog seems friendly and contented, with a high, wagging tail. But when the owner drives away, the dog chases after it, tail still wagging. Unfortunately, the owner didn't let anyone in the shelter know they'd dropped off the dog, and it was another six days before workers realized the animal had been left. A frantic search of the area turned up the dog's body, after being struck and killed by a passing car near an interstate on-ramp.

Police are not releasing the identity of the owner, because they have not been charged with a crime, at this point. But in a Facebook post, police thanked the public for their help identifying the person who has since been interviewed by investigators. The case has now been forwarded to the District Attorney's office to determine whether charges will be filed.
