Orono Will Also Celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day Instead Of Columbus Day

Orono has joined Bangor and Belfast in celebrating "Indigenous Peoples' Day."

The Orono Town Council voted to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day instead of Columbus Day Monday night. According to the BDN it was a unanimous 6-0 vote among councilors.

Supporters and opponents shared their opinion on the matter prior to the vote.

New ordinances in Orono take effect 30 days after council approval, which would be Oct. 11, 2017 -- two days after the holiday.

Bangor City Council voted to celebrate "Indigenous Peoples' Day" last month. Belfast was the first community in Maine to adopt the holiday in 2015.
