I was relieved to hear, this morning, that Burt's Bees co-founder, Burt Shavitz wasn't injured when a chimney fire got out of control at his home earlier this week. The fire spread to the second floor but fire officials say the house may be salvageable. If you've missed it on Netflix, check out Burt's story in the documentary 'Burt's Buzz.'

A true Mainer, in many ways, Shavitz is a quiet, private man. He accepts the fame that goes with his line of personal care products, and even attends conventions set up to honor him as an iconic figure. And through it all, he smiles, shakes hands, and makes small talk.

But the documentary shows another side to Burt. He lives simply, despite the fact that he co-founded one of the most successful companies in our state. Of course, he sold the rights to that company to co-founder Roxanne Quimby for a very small portion of the millions she made when she turned around and sold it to someone else. Is he bitter about that? You should watch the documentary to hear what he has to say.

I loved the film and found Burt an interesting and colorful person. So glad that he's okay, and I hope he recovers from this setback as easily as he seems to do everything else.
