A fire at an Oakland home Thursday morning is being called suspicious.

The home on Oak Street was unoccupied and scheduled to go on the auction block next week.

Oakland Fire Chief Dave Coughlin says the state fire marshal's office has been called in to investigate the blaze.

“The fire is suspicious at this point,” Coughlin told the Kennebec Journal.

Investigators say it appears the blaze started in the basement of the single-story ranch style home.

Coughlin says the flames were knocked down quickly but the house suffered extensive smoke and heat damage.

No one was hurt in the fire.
