New Hampshire Pair Hides In Woods To Avoid Maine Police

Two people from New Hampshire face charges after running into the woods while trying to elude law enforcement in Southern Maine.

The incident began at around 4:00 Friday morning, when York County Sheriff's Deputy Cody Frazier tried to pull over a 1998 Toyota camper for having a taillight out and for operating erratically. The vehicle didn't stop, even when Frazier turned on his lights and siren, but continued southbound on the Sokokis Trail, entering Waterboro. At one point during the pursuit, the driver shut off the exterior lights of the vehicle in an apparent attempt to elude the deputy.

The camper continued on until it turned left onto Bradeen Road, which is a dead end. At the end of the road, the vehicle crashed through a snowbank and kept going onto an uncleared path in the woods. When it got to the point where the camper couldn't continue, two people jumped from the vehicle and ran into the woods.

Deputies followed the suspects' tracks and found 27-year-old Martina Cervantes of Concord, New Hampshire and 28-year-old Shawn Davis of East Wakefield, New Hampshire. One of the suspects was hiding under a tree while the other had found refuge in a crawl space at a nearby house. Shawn Davis, who had been driving the camper, was found to be in possession of 7 grams of Heroin and was sought on warrants from Maine and New Hampshire for drug related charges. He was also charged with eluding an officer and officials anticipated more charges will be added. He's being held on $5,000 bail.

Martina Cervantes was charged with failure to submit to a police officer and is being held on $500 bail. Both will be video arraigned today.
