New American Terminology – Shelter in Place

As we all sit glued to our televisions and radios, waiting for news on the manhunt in Boston, a new term is being discussed. People are being asked to “shelter in place,” or stay in their homes until police sound the “all clear.” Obviously, our world is changing as terrorism has come to our home soil, and we need to make sure we’re prepared for what comes next.

I think New Englanders are probably more prepared than most, because we’re used to being snowed in, or going without power for extended periods of time. But still, we expect things like that. Weather forecasts will alert us to the possibility of being stuck at home. Something like the events that are unfolding in Boston can’t be anticipated.

So take a few minutes to look around your home. What if police told you to stay in your home “until further notice.” Would you have the things you need?

Food is the top priority, obviously. Canned goods, peanut butter and crackers, granola bars, and candy are all good things to keep on-hand. And, of course, drinking water.

Take a look at your electronics. Do you have a battery-operated radio, just in case police have to cut power? Keep extra batteries on-hand for your radio and for your cellphone. Which brings up another topic. I know there are still people who resist the idea of having a cell phone. But it’s worth your own personal safety to keep one with you, even if you only use it for emergencies.

Don’t forget about the household members who can’t speak up for themselves. Keep a good supply of diapers and baby formula/food on hand. And pet food is important too! Medications are important too. If you have meds that you have to take on a daily basis, it’s a good idea to keep a few extras on-hand, just in case.

The Center for Disease Control has a great website that gives all the information you need about how to “shelter in place.” It’s a dangerous world. Let’s make sure we’re prepared!
