What an honor it is to have a Maine mountain rank on a National Geographic "top list." But it's awesome and somewhat shocking how high this mountain did rank!

Among some of the most infamous mountains in the world on this list is one of Maine's most loved mountain hikes. Mount Katahdin comes in at No. 2 for best summit hike in the world! Can you believe it!?

Some of the things that make the hike one of the best are obvious things like the views and the Appalachian Trail. One of the other things that set Mount Katahdin apart for National Geographic was the history Henry David Thoreau left on the mountain with poetry and stories.

The only mountain summit hike better than Mount Katahdin was Hekla, Iceland. One of their most active volcanoes! Helagsfjället, Sweden takes the No. 3 spot.
