Name of Victim and Preliminary Cause Released in Fatal Crash

The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department has concluded its preliminary investigation into a two vehicle crash that claimed one life in Liberty.

Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton says one man was killed and another transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened shortly after eight yesterday morning and forced the shut down of Route 3 for a time.

The man killed is identified as 69 year old Gary Diffin of Augusta and the man driving the other vehicle is identified as 23 year old Ethan Hopkins of Orland.

Chief Deputy Trafton says the preliminary investigation indicates Hopkins was traveling East on Route 3 when he apparently dozed off and crossed the center line striking Diffin’ s vehicle head on.

Hopkins was transported to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast.
