Motorist Used Army First Aid Training To Help Motorcyclist In Orrington Crash

A driver whose car was hit nearly head-on by a motorcycle Sunday in Orrington used his Army first aid training to help stabilize the bike's driver until help could arrive.

The accident happened at around 5:30 Sunday evening on Route 15 in Orrington. 25-year-old Craig Woodard of Bucksport was headed home when his car was struck by a motorcycle, driven by 22-year-old John Gerald of Carmel.

Woodard told the BDN that his Army training took over as he ran to help Gerard and the bike's passenger, 23-year-old Breanne McIntyre of Newburgh. He pulled off his belt and used it as a tourniquet on Gerald, whose leg was amputated in the accident, and then covered the wound with his shirt. At last report, both Gerald and McIntyre were listed in serious condition in the hospital.

Police closed Route 15 Sunday, while they worked to reconstruct the accident. Now, investigators are looking at the Saturn and the motorcycle to try and determine whether mechanical problems on either may have contributed to the crash. So far, police have not been able to interview Gerald or McIntyre.

According to a GoFundME page that has been set up to help cover McIntyre's medical expenses, she has had surgery for a broken leg, and suffered head injuries. Gerald is scheduled for surgery today for a broken pelvis. There is also a GoFundMe page set up for his medical expenses.

Motorists are reminded to be alert, and keep their eyes open for motorcycles. Bikers are also reminded to make sure that motorists can see them.
