A motorcycle ride starting Saturday from the Bangor Waterfront will benefit Literacy Volunteers of Bangor.

The 80-mile ride called 'Leather for Literacy' will start on the Bangor Waterfront, and will take the bikes through Milo and Dover-Foxcroft, before circling back to Central Maine Harley-Davidson in Hermon. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m., with kickstands up at 10:30 a.m.

At the end of the ride, everyone's encouraged to join in the fun at Central Maine Harley Davidson, with the Darling's Ice Cream For A Cause Truck, along with lunch, and music from Bee Bop Bob's DJ Service. More than 20 items will be raffled off, including a kayak, an overnight stay at Hollywood Casino, and several gift certificates from area businesses. All the proceeds from the day will benefit the Bangor chapter of Literacy Volunteers.

Susan Gaspar organizes the ride, and she's also a tutor with LV. Since 2012, she's tutored a woman who wanted to boost her self-confidence by improving her reading so that she could be more active in her community.

"I've combined two pastimes that I love," Susan said in a press release from Literacy Volunteers,"being a tutor and riding a motorcycle. I see this ride as a way bikers can do their part to put the brakes on adult low literacy."

Interested riders can pre-register today and find more information on the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Bangor website. The ride has a suggested donation of $15 per bike.

Literacy Volunteers of Bangor helps roughly 300 adults every year with their education and literacy goals. The free, individualized services are available through the help of hundreds of volunteers and private donations.
