A motorcyclist is hospitalized after suffering serious head injuries in an accident over the weekend. State Police say speed was a factor.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release that Andrew Olson, age 39 of Augusta, was critically injured Sunday afternoon when his bike went off the road. Olson was traveling on the Cushnoc Road in Vassalboro at around 3:45 when his motorcycle left the road and struck a guy wire attached to a utility pole.

Trooper G. J. Neagle says it appears Olson lost control on a curve and that speed was a factor. Olson was not wearing a helmet. He was taken to MaineGeneral and later transferred to another hospital, although officials were not sure which one.

Assisting at the crash site were Vassalboro First Responders. Motorcyclists are reminded that the roads are covered in pot holes, frost heaves, sand, and dirt after a tough winter. Slow down and use caution when riding.
