A motorcyclist was killed when his bike crossed the center line and struck a car traveling in the opposite direction. Investigators are now working to try and determine what caused the man to veer out of his lane.

The Hancock County Sheriff's Office reports the accident happened just before six o'clock Thursday evening. A 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle being driven by Gerald Guse, 71, of Orland had entered the Northbound lane of Acadia Highway in Orland from the breakdown lane.

Suddenly, police say, the bike crossed the center line and struck an oncoming Volkswagen operated by Steven McDonough, 60, of Bangor. Guse, who was wearing a helmet, was taken by Bucksport Ambulance to EMMC where he died from his injuries.

McDonough received minor cuts and abrasions and was treated at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. 34-year-old Sarah McDonough, 17-year-old Bevanny McDonough and 7-year-old Pepper Tilley, all of Orland, who were also in the car, were not hurt.
