A motorcyclist was injured yesterday when his bike was sandwiched between two pickups at a crosswalk.

The accident happened at around 3:30 Thursday afternoon on the Route 302 Causeway in Naples. The Cumberland County Sheriff's Department reports a Nissan pickup truck stopped for pedestrians in a marked crosswalk and the motorcycle traveling behind the truck also stopped. A third vehicle, a GMC 2500 pickup did not stop in time and struck the motorcyclist, crushing the bike and operator between the two trucks.

58-year-old Stephen Caron of Biddeford, who was driving the motorcycle, was transported by Naples EMS to Bridgton Hospital and then transferred to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with traumatic head injuries. At last report, he was listed in critical condition. Officials say Caron was not wearing a helmet. There's no word on whether the two drivers, 74-year-old Malcolm Buchanan of Casco who was driving the lead pickup, and 73-year-old Larry Huntley of Scarborough, who was driving the GMC, were hurt in the accident.

The Cumberland County Reconstruction Team and Criminal Investigation Division continue to investigate the crash. Officials say speed and/or alcohol do not appear to have been factors.
