The Taylor tags will be offered at all DMV locations starting Oct. 1. The original bill proposed mandatory stickers for all cars driven by those with intermediate licenses to alert police and other motorists that there's a new driver in that car.

By law under the age of 18 (ages 16-17) an intermediate driver has a 9-month period of which this person cannot carry any passengers except immediate family members, including foreign exchange students or a court-appointed guardianship of a family member.

Instead of making driver decals mandatory for all new drivers, lawmakers amended and passed the bill making the program as voluntary on Tuesday.

15-year-old Taylor Darveau was a passenger in a car with her 16-year-old friend in October 2013. They were racing another car when the car crashed killing Taylor. The bill aims to reduce the number of teen crash victims in the future. Center for Disease Control and Prevention says motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for United State teens.

A spokesperson for Gov. Paul LePage said he hasn't decided whether he'll sign the bill or not. If enacted, the Legislature would revisit the program in two years and decide if the decals should be made mandatory.
