Miranda Lambert and Billie Joe Armstrong Pay Tribute to Phil Everly at 2014 Grammys

Miranda Lambert paired up with Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day at the 2014 Grammys for a special memorial performance to honor the late Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers.

The memoriam portion of the Grammys is always emotional, as it highlights different music greats who have died in the year priod. 2013 held the passing of many well-known country music stars, including Ray Price, Mindy McCready, Cowboy Jack Clement and others in addition to Everly, who passed away Jan. 3 from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Lambert and Armstrong, an unlikely duo, paid a special tribute to Everly with a Sunday night performance (Jan. 26), singing ‘When Will I Be Loved,’ which was a hit single for the Everly Brothers in the summer of 1960.

The duet was made extra special as the late singer’s family was shown on camera at the awards, looking understandably emotional throughout.

Lambert and Armstrong’s rendition was subdued, but held a touch of spunk that the country songstress is known for. The ‘Mama’s Broken Heart’ star looked glamorous in a floor-length black gown with a deep V-neck and long, leaf-shaped earrings, while Armstrong also chose to wear black, letting both their voices do the talking.

As she stated prior to the 2014 Grammys appearance, Lambert was understandably excited for the collaboration. “Doing the original version is really cool,” she said. “We were listening to Billie Joe and Norah [Jones] on the way here, and his voice sounds so amazing on this kind of music.”

The pair’s hard work paid off, and they put in a fantastic performance — and, even better, gave props to Everly, a truly great musician who will be forever missed.
