Mike Michaud Takes Initial Step Into Maine Governor’s Race

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, D-Maine, announced Thursday he would form an exploratory committee as part of a campaign for Maine governor in 2014. 

In his video announcement (above) the Democrat from East Millinocket seemed to make reference to the state's outspoken Republican Gov. Paul LePage, who is often publicly at odds with lawmakers.

“We need a governor who can restore civility in Augusta, while treating everyone with dignity and respect,” Michaud said.

Michaud's announcement doesn't mean he has formally entered the race. The formation of an exploratory committee is designed to gauge public and financial support for a candidacy.

Michaud, 58, currently is serving his sixth term in the House.

LePage hasn't formally announced a reelection bid, but has registered a campaign committee with state officials. Independent Eliot Cutler, who finished second to LePage in 2010, announced his candidacy last week.
