Wardens say the Massachusetts man was not wearing a helmet when the vehicle struck a tree.

Corporal John MacDonald of the Warden Service says the accident happened Sunday in the town of Carthage. 27-year-old Taylor Curtin of Belchertown, Massachusetts was camping with friends at the Rocky Mountain Terrain Park, located off Winter Hill Road, when he borrowed a friend's 2007 Can Am 800 ATV. He was returning to the campsite at around 1:30 in the afternoon when the vehicle went airborne and struck a tree.

Curtin was not wearing a helmet and wardens say speed appears to have been a contributing factor. He died at the scene and his body will now be examined by the State Medical Examiner's Office.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Med-Care EMS, and fire departments from Carthage and East Dixfield assisted with the incident that remains under investigation.
