The U.S. has the highest incarceration rates in the world but Maine is not contributing many numbers to statistics with the lowest incarceration rates in the U.S.

Maine's incarceration rate per 100,000 was a mere 380 compared to Lousiana's 1,380 per 100,000. Our incarcerated population including those in jail and prisons in the state is 4,100 with about 6,600 on parole.

Pewtrusts.org's article on 'The States at a Crossroads' focuses on how each state is changing their sentencing for certain crimes and cutting back on jail time and adding more parole.

Massachusetts is actually tied with Maine. Vermont and Minnesota are not too far behind with 390.
