A wellness check by a State Trooper ended with a man being taken to the hospital. At last report he was undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound.

Trooper Benjamin Campbell was at the mobile home on Water Street in Howland in answer to a call from Dale Saucier, age 36. But something happened during what was supposed to be a welfare check and Saucier ended up being wounded in an armed confrontation. There are few details at this point, other than that Saucier was undergoing emergency surgery at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Campbell has been placed on administrative leave with pay and the incident is being reviewed by the Attorney General's Office, as is customary with police-involved shootings.
