Police say the driver who killed himself in Gardiner was originally from Dedham and the woman in the trunk wasn't killed in Maine.

The case of a man who shot and killed himself during a traffic stop in Gardiner and had a dead body in the trunk has just become even more mysterious. Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says 34-year-old Gyrth Rutan of Sturbridge, Massachusetts is the man who got out of the vehicle when police pulled him over for driving erratically, pulled out a shotgun, and shot himself in the head. His death has been ruled a suicide. Rutan was living in Massachusetts, but his Facebook page indicates that he's originally from Dedham and had attended both Brewer and Hermon High Schools.

The body that police found in the trunk of Rutan's vehicle has only been confirmed to be a female who was not killed in Maine. That death is being investigated by the Worcester County District Attorney's Office and the Massachusetts State Police.

Maine officials say it's not clear why Rutan drove to Maine, but he may have been here to visit with family.

We'll update this story as more details become available.
