Police have released the identity of a man who died after he allegedly stole a pickup truck and then lead police on a high speed chase. The man engaged in a gunfight with police before his body was found in the car.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says it started when Steven Piirainen, age 52 of South Paris allgedly stole a pickup in Paris. Police gave chase and the man lead them to the Circle K convenience store on Main Street in the town of Mexico.

Gunfire was exchanged between the man, a state trooper, and a Mexico police officer. McCausland said in a press release that state police tactical teams confirmed the man's body was found inside the pickup, although it's unclear whether he was shot by police or killed himself. None of the officers were injured.

An autopsy today should reveal how Piirainen died. Because police were involved, the Attorney General's office will investigate the shooting, which is standard procedure.
