Man Allegedly Dealing Heroin Out of YMCA Meets Agents At Door With Drugs in Hand

Agents who investigated a report of a man selling heroin out of the YMCA were surprised when they knocked on his door. The man in question greeted them with bags of heroin in his hands.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release that Maine Drug Enforcement Agents from the Cumberland District Task Force investigated suspected heroin trafficking out of the Portland YMCA on November 14th. Agents had received information from several sources that a man driving a black Acura TL, who rented a room at the Y, was selling heroin from the car and from his room.

When the agents knocked on the door of room #336 at the YMCA, 43-year-old Frank Gerry of Portland opened the door holding several small bags of suspected heroin. Apparently, he was expecting a customer, not MDEA agents. Gerry was arrested without incident for possessing heroin.

A search of the rented room and vehicle turned up over an ounce of suspected heroin, an electronic scale, and packaging materials. Police say Gerry was in the process of repackaging bulk heroin into individual doses for resale at the time agents arrived. The approximate street value of the drugs is $8,000.

Gerry was sent to the Cumberland County Jail where bail was set at $10,000. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call the MDEA field office nearest you, or call the MDEA Drug Tip Hotline at 800-452-6457.
