A Waldoboro man was charged with animal cruelty after police say he neglected his dog for so long that the animal had to be euthanized.

A Waldoboro resident reported finding the dog, a English setter, on Sept. 8, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Animal Control Officer Julie Groleau responded. She said the animal appeared to be malnourished, had several open sores and much of its fur was missing.

The dog was taken to the Boothbay Animal Hospital. A veterinarian said that due to the dog's condition, the animal was euthanized to prevent further suffering.

According to police, a few hours later, John Osier, 49, called to report his dog missing.

After police confirmed that his missing dog was the same animal that had been euthanized, Osier was issued a summons for animal cruelty.

Osier told police that his pet had not been seen by a veterinarian in more than eight years.
