Maine’s Research and Development Leads the Nation in Harnessing the Wind {Video & Audio}

It was envisioned, designed, and developed in the state of Maine, and it will lead the nation in the development of renewable energy.

VolturnUS was introduced to the public and christened today, by U.S. Senator Susan Collins, at a long-awaited ceremony at Cianbro's Eastern Manufacturing Facility in Brewer.

VolturnUS is the first, grid-connected, offshore wind turbine to be produced in North America and the six years of collaborative research and development by the University of Maine-led DeepCwind consortium was celebrated today as the turbine starts on its journey to the off shore coastal waters of Maine.

Below are audio portions of today's presentation.

The first segment comes with an introduction of Dr. Habib Dagher with the University of Maine's Offshore Wind Laboratory at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center, by President and CEO of Cianbro, Peter Vique.

In this segment Dr. Dagher goes on to explain the process of how the turbine will be put in to place off Castine, and provides you with a little historical trivia about the ties between the University of Maine, energy generation, and the Hoover Dam.

As for the name of the wind turbine prototype?

Dr. Dagher says a UMaine student came up with it, citing a Roman God of the wind and water combined with voltage and the United States.
