Folks in Winthrop will jump into Maranacook Lake next month to raise money for the Maine Law Enforcement Torch Run, which supports Special Olympics Maine.

The second annual Ice Out Plunge is scheduled for April 11.

At last year's inaugural event, 60 participants and hundreds of spectators raised $18,000 for Special Olympics athletes.

Lisa Bird, head of public relations for Special Olympics Maine, said this year's goal is $20,000.

“This year the excitement around it is so much bigger than last year,” Bird told the Kennebec Journal. “We really feel like we’re definitely going to be over what we did last year.”

The Ice Out Plunge is open to everyone 8 and older.
