The Scripps National Spelling Bee is just around the corner and Maine students will meet this weekend for the right to represent the state at the event.

The state's top spellers will compete Saturday at Hannaford Hall at the University of Southern Maine in Portland.

According to the Portland Press Herald, defending Maine champion Steffi Victoria will be competing on Saturday. Steffi is a seventh grader at Sedomocha Middle School in Dover-Foxcroft.

Isaiah Hink-Moore, Sacopee Valley Middle School, Hiram

Emily Whitney, Chop Point School, Woolwich

Michael Hockenberry, Skowhegan Area Middle School

Caroline Beckwith, Maine Connections Academy, Winterport

Anthony Soucie, Harrington Elementary

Bryce Morales, Berwick Academy

Nasim Adam, Winthrop Middle School

Every Maine county, except Penobscot, will be represented at the event in Portland.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee takes place in Washington, D.C. May 24-29.
