A man who was wanted in Maine in connection with a New Year's Day stabbing is now in custody in his home state of Rhode Island.

Skowhegan Police say 32-year-old Christopher Monroe has been on the run since allegedly stabbing 29-year-old Christopher Hongo of Norridgewock multiple times in the chest and neck area. The suspect, who had been living in Waterville, was last seen leaving the scene of the alleged assault with a woman in a red van. The woman has not been charged.

Local police contacted law enforcement in Rhode Island about the arrest warrant for a charge of Elevated Aggravated Assault. Monroe was arrested on Monday in Newport, Rhode Island, where he will be processed for extradition sought by the state of Maine.

The victim is still recovering from the assault that happened on Alder Street in Skowhegan at around 1:30 a.m. on January 1st.
