The top five states for beer consumption per capita are North Dakota, New Hampshire, Montana, South Dakota and Wisconsin, according to a survey released by the Beer Institute, a trade organization.

North Dakota drank about 45.8 gallons of beer per resident 21 and older last year. The figures do not include anyone under the age of 21.

Maine was ranked 10th in beer consumption in the nation with 34 gallons of beer per resident.

The states that consume the least suds per capita are Utah, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Kentucky, with Utah residents drinking about 20.2 gallons of beer on average last year.

Most of the beer across the board -- 72 percent, in fact, -- was consumed by men.
