The Madawaska Police Department said Raymond Gossett, 58, and Nicholas Gossett, 31, were charged in the incident that was reported on March 11.

According to a post on the department's Facebook page, the Gossetts had attempted to give away a kitten and when they were unable to find any takers, they placed the kitten inside a pet carrier and then put it in a garbage dumpster.

Fortunately, a local merchant heard the kitten's cries and removed the animal before the sanitation company emptied the dumpster, police said.

The two men are scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
