A man from Machias died while kayaking with his daughter in the town of Whiting.

WABI-TV reports 48-year-old Allen Devericks was out on Indian Lake with his daughter when his kayak capsized. Both he and his daughter cried for help, alerting a man at a nearby camp. He jumped in his canoe and attempted to rescue Devericks but, in the excitement, his canoe overturned, as well.

Wardens say Devericks slipped beneath the surface. By the time he was pulled out of the water, he couldn't be revived. There were life jackets in the kayaks but wardens say he and his daughter weren't wearing them.

This is the state's 13th drowning this year.
