A traveling short film festival stops in Ellsworth this Thursday with its celebration of women called 'Lunafest!'

So what's Lunafest all about? First, the name. It's called Lunafest because it's sponsored by Luna Energy bars. Makes sense, right? But Luna is also the ancient Roman moon goddess. I think this is cool because my given name, Cynthia, is the Greek moon goddess. So I feel a kinship with this event! Plus, of course, I'm a woman and that's what this event is all about.

Next, and most importantly, Lunafest involves nine films by, for, and about women and helps local non-profits in each community, along with its main sponsor, which is the Breast Cancer Fund. In Ellsworth, Lunafest will benefit the Next Step Domestic Violence Project of Hancock County. This organization has one amazing goal - to put an end to domestic violence. If you're a victim of domestic violence, the project's 24-hour hotline is there to help at 1-800-315-5579.

Lunafest will celebrate women this Thursday at the Grand in Ellsworth, beginning at 7 p.m. Some of the subject matter may be difficult or inappropriate for children so, while most of the films are not rated, it's suggested that attendees be at least 16 years old. Advance tickets can be purchased online through The Grand's website, or you can buy them at the door. Don't miss this national effort to recognize everything that makes women wonderful. Get your sisters, aunts, mother, daughters, and girlfriends together for Lunafest!
