Remember this opening line from Paul Harvey's speech on the American Farmer?

And on the 8th day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, "I need a caretaker." So God made a farmer.

God said, "I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the fields, milk cows again, eat supper and then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board." So God made a farmer...

There is something to be said about one of our most precious resources: The Farmer. Having worked on a few farms in my young life, I can appreciate the hard work, calloused hands, and never ending energy of a farmer. They are a different sort, both in work ethic and attitude. Some are funny, some are rougher than sandpaper in speech and attitude, and some are quiet...like Bud Skalla of Des Moines, Iowa.

Skalla was known as the loner farmer who pretty much kept to himself, so it's no surprise that he didn't have any real friends. Well, upon his recent passing, Skalla surprised many by leaving behind an unexpected gift.
