If you've wondered what Susan Patten is doing since leaving us at Townsquare Media, this will explain it. She's working to make sure area students have the instruments they want to learn how to play. Her organization, called The Gifts of Music, does some amazing work.

Actually, Susan founded 'The Gifts of Music' years ago, as a way to share her passion for music with others. Susan is a vocalist, plays the flute, and teaches both to area students. As a parent, she often saw families struggle to be able to pay rental fees so their kids could pursue music education. So she decided it was time to do something about it.

TGOM takes donations of used instruments, refurbishes them, and then makes them available to area music programs. If there's a family that can't afford to purchase or rent the instrument they want to learn, TGOM will do what they can to make sure that child gets what they need.

In addition, they provide scholarships that send students to music camp each summer. This gives the kids a chance to expand their musical education. For many, that love of music will stay with them for the rest of their lives, whether they continue to play, or just develop a greater appreciation for the performances of others.

As a former piano and flute player, I can tell you that my musical background has served me well. Although I don't play anymore, I'll never forget the times I had in band, orchestra, chorus, and woodwind quintet. I love music and wouldn't trade my experiences for anything.

Obviously, The Gifts of Music can't do all this on their own. If you have a used instrument that's collecting dust, they'd love to have it! And if you'd like to make a financial donation, they will certainly welcome that, as well. Learn more about TGOM and how you can help them in their wonderful mission at their website!
