I was prepared to hate the latest installment of the apes vs. man movie genre. But Jim insisted he really wanted to see 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,' so I gave it a chance.  I thought they wouldn't be able to tell the story in a new and interesting way. And I'm here to tell you, I was wrong!

I've always been a bit of a purist where 'Planet of the Apes' movies are concerned. I mean, I grew up on the originals. Charleton Heston ("You damn dirty ape!") and Roddy McDowell battling for freedom and control. And the shock we all felt when Heston's character came across the remains of the Statue of Liberty.

I thought that the CG graphics would ruin the 'feel' of the movie. And, I will admit, when the film first started, I was not impressed. The CG images of running elk and a large bear looked a lot like a video game. So I figured that the whole movie would be that way and it would take a classic theme and make it cartoonish.

But I couldn't have been farther away from the truth .The storyline is compelling, and the acting is awesome, including the apes. And that's a big point to emphasize about this movie, it's all about the apes. The humans are almost secondary to the story. And, honestly, their acting is not always stellar, but the apes are hard to tear your eyes away from.

I would definitely recommend the film, 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' to anyone who enjoys science fiction, great special effects, and 'damn, dirty apes.' It's a great movie!
