Everything We Know About Kacey Musgraves’ New Album, ‘Golden Hour’
The year 2018 will be a good one for Kacey Musgraves fans: The singer has revealed that she'll be releasing her third studio album early in the year!
Musgraves' freshman album, Same Trailer Different Park, will turn five in March of 2018, but fans should have something new from the singer-songwriter around that time. Below, The Boot rounds up all of the details known so far about Musgraves' third studio album.
Musgraves' third studio album will be titled Golden Hour; Entertainment Weekly revealed the news on Dec. 12. The album's title, Musgraves explains to EW, was inspired in part by experiencing the total solar eclipse that occurred over the summer.
“It felt like this majestic time where God was saying, ‘This is a moment to be present for, to witness and relish in the beauty of this incredible world,’” Musgraves explains. “That was important for me to include on this record. It’s such an ugly time right now with society and politics, and it could be easy to focus on that. But one thing we could use is a little more love and positivity and pretty colors.”
A fun note as well: Musgraves was born in Golden, Texas.
The Release Date
Golden Hour is due out on March 30. The album is available for pre-order via various platforms.
The Record Label
Musgraves is signed to Mercury Nashville.
The Album Cover
The Golden Hour album cover features Musgraves, holding an ornate fan in front of the lower part of her face and standing in front of a bright blue backdrop -- perhaps a clear blue sky. Her hair appears to be slightly blowing in the wind. Musgraves' name and the album's title appear in small text.
Musgraves' Golden Hour co-producers are Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian. Fitchuk is a Nashville session musician, while Tashian is part of the group the Silver Seas; both are songwriters as well.
Musgraves has not yet released a single from Golden Hour; however, fans who pre-order the album will receive instant downloads of two tracks, "Space Cowboy" and "Butterflies." The Boot will update this post when a single is announced.
To Entertainment Weekly, Musgraves describes Golden Hour as "trippy;" her influences for the project, she says, were Neil Young, Sade and the Bee Gees. The artist wrote most of the album in 2017, except for one previously written, unreleased track that she's performed live.
“I have a lot more love songs this time around, and I’ve never been one to write a love song and really feel it,” Musgraves says. “That probably sounds like the most depressing thing ever. [But] I’m coming off getting married and being in this golden hour of my personal life, where all these things are finally coming to fruition. I found myself inspired to write about this person and all these things he brought out in me that weren’t there before.”
Musgraves' collaborators for Golden Hour include Luke Laird, Shane McAnally and Natalie Hemby, as well as Fitchuk and Tashian.
“I was thinking about how there are different masks that we wear that represent different sides of us. None of the masks are solely us, but they’re all us," Musgraves explains of the album's theme. "On this record, there’s the lonely girl, the blissful girl, the new wife, the girl that’s missing her mom, the angry girl, the sarcastic girl, the ‘60s-sequined Cruella de Vil with the beehive, the shy girl, the life of the party, the winner, the loser — they’re all characters on this record. None of them alone are me, but the golden hour is when they all come together and you see me as a whole."
Fellow singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow also played a role in Golden Hour's creation: The album was recorded in the studio above Crow's horse stable, so she would come hang out every so often.
